COVER WARS: OCTOBER 2017

It’s October, Ladies & Gentlemen! This month does not only signify Halloween Month but the start of Beauty Month in the Philippines. During this time of the year, the top magazines review and deliberate which are the top beauty products in every category. Whether it may be hair, body, face, and oral hygiene—You name it, it’s there.

Though talking about beauty products and suggesting my top recommendations sounds like a treat, let’s save that for another time. For now, let us dive right into this month’s ‘Cover Wars’. Place your bets now; will it be Mega, Preview or Metro?

MEGA MAGAZINE

‘Discover the different facets of a woman’

Mega teases its audience with this noteworthy quote amidst a noir-like setting. I’m positive, curiosity crawled into the minds of the readers waiting for the reveal.

Kathryn portrayed six different characters for this issue: Lady Danger (Rajo Laurel), Lady Artistic (John Herrera), Lady Mystery (Francis Libiran), Lady Renaissance (Puey Quinones) , Lady Ethereal (Lesley Mobo),  and Lady Passion (Mark Bumgarner).

Kathryn started acting at quite a young age and through time people forget that she is becoming a woman and shying away from that ‘sweet’ image everyone associates she should be. If you must know, according to Mega, Kathryn is dangerous, mysterious, passionate, artistic, ethereal and a woman reborn; She is a prism of many faces.

I have to commend Mega as they executed each cover flawlessly. Each cover worked hand-and-hand together, it portrayed a story that did not need any words; it simply portrayed Kathryn. Mega illustrated all that she was and all that she wanted to be known for.

PREVIEW MAGAZINE

Pia breaks the barrier in this month’s October Issue. Inspired by the Cavalryman & Kings of the 16th Century, An era of women being exempted from acquiring professional jobs and exempted from attending school, Pia is breaking the norm with her rendition of ‘who runs the world’.

Shot on site at La Mesa Eco Park, gloomy and rain-filled clouds on end, the scenery complemented the whole aesthetic of the shoot all too well. The lush greenery amongst the stunning bronze, gold and silver tones enhanced the overall state of its entirety. It’s obvious that Pia still holds the title ‘Confidently Beautiful with a Heart’.

This is Pia’s 2nd cover with preview. This month, she recalls all the hard lessons she learned throughout the battles she had faced. She experienced self-doubt and defeat but this did not hinder her whatsoever. She explains that the best way to win is always through learning and preparation.

Pia is a definite example that women do run the world and there is no ounce of doubt in my mind.

METRO MAGAZINE

We’ve come to our final cover and it’s coming in ‘HOT’

Mega brings you this year’s ‘Hot List Issue’; an annual tally of the biggest, newest hits in fashion, beauty and culture. There is only one woman who can graze the covers for this burning issue? Nadine Lustre—that’s who.

Nadine embodies the old French in this enticing vintage editorial. The fusion of pastel and jewel tones ties in well to the esthetic of the shoot. The oak wood furniture, brass statues, and old tapestries compliment the tale.

Nadine explains to Metro, “I want to be an inspiration to a lot of people to be themselves’’. This issue celebrates the authenticity, daring mores and self-truth of Nadine.

Though rather appealing, the entire concept of the shoot was a miss for me. It lacked a certain element I could not quite pin point. Nonetheless, It still has a flare that both Mega and Preview could never compete with.

Well, there you have it; three powerful women and three stunning covers. I’m in a dilemma though as we have a tie between MEGA and PREVIEW magazine this month.

After careful deliberation, I have come to my final decision.

This month’s ‘Cover Wars’ winner is…

MEGA MAGAZINE

Mega came out last during the ‘Big Fashion’ Issue face-off but came back on top for October. Now, that’s what I’m talking about!

Basically, I'm your girl for everything beauty.
