Traveling overseas could be tricky at times. More often than not, you tend to miss the most important part of the travel preparation which is budgeting. For some, they tend to use their card, whenever-wherever, some even without batting an eyelash!
Remember, just because you have that mighty card to salvage you from that shopping hysteria, doesn’t mean you can just crack and abuse it. Be a wise cardholder and make the most out of your credit card when traveling abroad with the following tips.
KNOW THY CARD PERKS
Being a credit cardholder may entitle you to useful perks like travel or medical assistance and concierge services. Some of the best travel credit cards also come with travel arrangements, restaurant reservations, and emergency assistance.
TELL YOUR CARD PROVIDER THAT YOU’RE TRAVELING
Inform your bank that you’re traveling ahead of time. Most banks use a safety software that automatically locks your card to prevent fraudulent usage and card hackers.
The last thing you don’t want to happen is for you to keep on calling overseas, just to connect with your bank to have it activated again, and vouch for the legitimacy of the transaction.
FOREIGN TRANSACTION FEES
There are also foreign fees that you need to take note of. Be sure that before you use your card overseas, you have initially checked with your provider the add-on charges that entails you in every swipe. Such fees can be as high as 3.50% of your total transaction amount. If you travel regularly, it’s advisable to get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees to save money on your purchases.
