Instagram is planning to revive its chronological feed, after getting rid of the option back in 2016.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced that the social media giant is looking for a way to add the chronological feed option for its users. Speaking at a Senate hearing about teen safety and the influence of social media on children, he shared that the company plans to “give people the option to have a chronological feed.” “We’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year,” Mosseri commented, adding that the company aims to launch the feature during the first quarter of 2022.
Following up on the initial announcement, Instagram confirmed the news: “We want people to have meaningful control over their experience. We’ve been experimenting with Favorites, a way for you to decide whose posts you want to see higher up, and we’re working on another option to see posts from people you follow in chronological order.” It further clarified: “We want to be clear that we’re creating new options — providing people with more choices so they can decide what works best for them — not switching everyone back to a chronological feed. You can expect more on this early next year.”
Before 2016, Instagram used to display posts in chronological order until they’ve decided to switch to an AI-driven algorithm.
