Last night, after thrilling everyone with their National Costumes, Miss Universe candidates showed their wit, wisdom, and grace under pressure as they faced the preliminary interviews that had each of them answering five questions.
The panel of judges asked each candidate vying for the crown five questions to test the cognitive skills and spontaneity of the beauty queens. The first question: 1) What’s the most important lesson you learned in the past week?; 2) If beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, in whose eyes are you beautiful?; 3) If we truly learn from our mistakes, would you advise a young person to keep making them?; 4) If you have the power to do one of the following一eliminate poverty or hunger, a government with no graft and corruption, or solve all environmental problems一which would you choose?; and one question courtesy of a pageant sponsor, Lazada, 5) If you were to add to cart one item to buy on Lazada to send to all Filipinos to help inspire them during this time, what would it be and why?
One of the tricky questions showed the thinking prowess of the candidates was about committing mistakes, and here are 7 of the best answers from the candidates.
Jan Louise Abejero, Isabela
“You can always make mistakes. Just be wise and learn from it. I’ve learned that it was through my failures in life and just getting back up every time I fall, that I’ve become more strong and that I’ve become the woman I am today.”
Rousanne Marie Bernos, San Juan City
“Probably not the same mistakes, but yes, keep making mistakes. Because throughout life, each time we take a risk, take a chance, that’s where we grow the most. And I can really say that I’ve done that many, many times. I’ve learned from my past mistakes, but I keep making more because, through those, I have grown as a person and I can keep getting better.”
Katrina Dimaranan, Taguig
“I would not advise them to make mistakes. But if they were to make mistakes, I would tell them that it’s completely okay. Because [of] our mistakes, it’s how we grow as a person, and we should take lessons from each of those mistakes in order for us to grow into better people.”
Michele Angela Navarro Okol, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte
“I wouldn’t advise them to keep making mistakes but I would remind them that there’s nothing wrong with making mistakes as long as we do our best to correct them for the future.”
Victoria Velasquez Vincent, Cavite
“I would advise them to keep taking risks, and if mistakes happen, then they happen and that’s okay. You’ll learn from them anyway.”
Simone Nadine Bornilla, Marinduque
“I think that as children we’re reminded that we should learn from our mistakes. And you know, because of this, we’re not supposed to be given an excuse to keep making them. We should be reminded that these are things that we have to avoid because again, these values, it’s what we have to stick to.”
Maureen Wroblewitz, Pangasinan
“Well, you should still try to achieve the best and still strive to be the best version of yourself. But you just need to recognize that mistakes are part of success and that you learn from your mistakes so you can do better the next time.”
The delegates are a step closer to the coronation night that’s scheduled to take place in the province of Bohol on September 30. Who is your bet?
