Riverdale star Vanessa Morgan recently trends on twitter with the hashtag #HearVanessaMorgan. Vanessa, who plays Toni Topaz on the show previously admitted that she was “tired” of black actors being used as a sidekick and playing non-dimensional characters to white leads. After a few days, Riverdale’s Executive Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa came forward with his response to Vanessa’s sentiments about entertainment’s portrayal of black people.
On Roberto’s Twitter account, He posted “We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa. She’s right.” He also expressed his support to one of his stars, ” We’re sorry and we make the same promise to you that we did to her.”
“We will do better to honor her and the character she plays. As well as all of our actors and characters with color.” He also revealed that Riverdale will undergo a BIG CHANGE on the show, he assured that it will and continue to happen, for a better series that everyone can be proud of, and the show WILL BE PART OF THE MOVEMENT, not against it.
The Executive Producer further revealed that the show’s writers have opened their purses and made a donation to Black Lives Matter in Los Angeles, The whole Riverdale staff are aware that the work must begin with them as well. Vanessa appeared to have accepted the apology, retweeting his pledge.
Vanessa also cleared that her speaking out doesn’t mean that she’s calling out her co-stars, who are predominantly white. According to her, Her role in Riverdale has nothing to do with her castmates and friends. “They don’t write the show, So no need to attack them. they don’t call the shots and I know they have my back.” she posted on Twitter. “And I will no longer take roles that don’t properly represent us. PERIOD.”
