THE LITTLE MERMAID CASTS A BLACK GIRL TO PLAY ARIEL’S ROLE

It’s all over Twitter, Disney‘s casting a black girl to play the role of Ariel in their live action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid“.

According to a report in Variety, Halle Bailey, the R&B singer has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney’s next live-action adaptation.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.

“The Little Mermaid” will incorporate original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

Though, some are not in favor of this move from Disney, many are happy in casting Halle as Ariel, in a status posted on Twitter, Halle sings “Unforgettable” and her chant is really captivating, and seems fitting for the role. Take a listen below.

Bailey will be joined by Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay, while Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula.
